One Year Without Marielle

Today—Thursday, March 14, 2019—marks one year since the assassination of Rio city councilor Marielle Franco and her driver Anderson Gomes. Born and raised in the Maré favela in Rio de Janeiro’s North Zone, and rising through adversity to the halls of Rio’s City Council, where the sociologist and human rights activist represented and advocated for numerous minorities in flesh and action—Afro-Brazilians, women, LGBT, favela residents, single mothers—Marielle has become an international symbol of resistance and grace. From March 11 to 17, social movements in Rio de Janeiro and around the world are holding events to commemorate Marielle’s life, what she fought for, and what her work represented. The following list includes memorials, cultural and political events, exhibitions, teach-ins, and more scheduled to take place this week.
